Death & Detachment
ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਰਨੇ ਤੇ ਜਗੁ ਡਰੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ॥ ਮਰਨੇ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੨੨॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1365}
Kabir, the death, that the world fears so much, fills me with bliss; because, it’s only through death (detachment) that we attain total liberation and spiritual bliss.
*Mortal death is not the final word. *
It’s just a ‘change of clothes’ event. We shed one apparel for another, unless, we’ve attained Jeevan Mukti (liberation during our lifetime), a very rare case, one in a billion. The asthool, punj bhootak sareer (the hardware comprising of the five elements, air, water, earth, fire and ether), remains here, it merges back into the five elements.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji states:
ਪਾਂਚ ਤਤ ਕੋ ਤਨੁ ਰਚਿਓ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਚਤੁਰ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥ ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਲੀਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੧॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 1427}
“As an astute man you know your body is made up of the five elements. In the end, O Nanak, it will submerge into the same five elements.” (11) Salok M 9 SGGS 1427.
The atma (soul, sooksham sareer, ‘software’), on the other hand, with the imprint of our karma, moves on looking for new apparel, new home. It presents itself at the Supreme Court of Truth and Righteousness, where it is judged according to it’s karma (karmi karmi hoyey vichaar – Japji Sahib).
In the Divine Court, those who acquit themselves with merit and honour receive the Glance of Approval, and are bestowed a seat in the Timeless Lord’s Darbar (Divine Court) The insignia (symbol) of Akal Purkh’s grace radiates on their faces. The earthly titles have no relevance there.
ਕਚ ਪਕਾਈ ਓਥੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਪੈ ਜਾਇ॥੩੪॥
“The individual’s qualities are tested, based on the criteria as laid down by the Court of Truth and Justice.” [Pauri 34 Japji Sahib].
Whilst the atma always merges back into the Param Atma (Universal Soul), the imprint (of karma) of those who don’t get the Glance of Approval, waits for the next garment for the soul. The fortunate ones may get a new shell, into which the Lord infuses His Consciousness, and the human instrument comes into play, for another opportunity to redeem itself. The less fortunate ones will have to wait longer for another human form, or even take up different forms of existences, till the next opportunity of human life.
