ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੈਡੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਕਾਲਾ ਮੈਡਾ ਵੇਸੁ ॥ ਗੁਨਹੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਦਰਵੇਸੁ ॥੬੧॥ {Salok 61 ਪੰਨਾ 1381}
O Farid, full of sins, I wander around, donned in black clothes, and an unholy appearance, yet people call me a ‘dervesh’ (holier than the holy).
Note:* ‘Dervesh’ is a Persian term relating to the Sufi fraternity, meaning a religious mendicant, who prefers a lifestyle of self-sacrifice and poverty.
