Jealousy and hatred weighs us down. They hamper the mind and inhibit our ability to think straight.
So unburden yourself; rise above hatred; feel light as a feather and fly like a bird. Reach for the skies.
If we could only see how jealousy and hatred affect our inside; how ugly and cluttered our inner chambers look. If the inner temple is dilapidated, what chance is there for The Super Consciousness to reveal itself? We can just as well carry on living in the darkness.
We often come across some people who on the outside look beautiful, but who otherwise we know are selfish and arrogant. Some are downright nasty. Such people live in vain and waste away the golden opportunity of human existence. Guru Amar Das clarifies:
bāhrahu nirmal jī▫ahu ṯa maile ṯinī janam jū▫ai hāri▫ā. (SGGS 919)
Those who on the outside look pure and pious but harbour ill feelings within are gambling away their lives, i.e. lose out.
Rarely, we do come across good natured, kind souls. They have risen above the base qualities of maya – the satvic (Satto gunni) part of our population – balanced individuals who take less but give back much more to society. They are pretty both inside and outside. Very few transcend the satvic stage to acquire param pad (supreme status). Again Guru Amar Das (Nanak 3) refers to them as follows:
bāhrahu ṯa nirmal jī▫ahu nirmal saṯgur ṯe karṇī kamāṇī. (SGGS 919)
Those who are not just pure and pious on the outside, but are equally clean and pious within, will perform good deeds with the direction and blessings of their Guru.
Let us avail ourselves of Guru Ji’s blessings and try and understand his precious message.
