Introduction – Values and Ethics

INTRODUCTION

Values and Ethics

A human being is known and judged by the values he or she subscribes to and follows. Good practice and good values give character and social acceptance to a man or woman. Values are regulated by both the society one lives in and the faith one follows. On top of that an individual may have cultural baggage and its associated values.

On the one hand there are legal requirements of any society one lives in. There is no choice or compromise regarding these, as default could land one in serious trouble, even prison.

Ethics of one’s faith may offer broader scope. The devotee, whilst broadly following the discipline, may interpret ethics as per his/her understanding. Some may take an orthodox approach and operate within a clique, whilst others may make adjustments to integrate within the broader strata of society.

Even within the same creed, views and values may vary widely depending on the colour, race and cultural background of the individual.

A person’s values, therefore, are influenced by many factors, amongst them, race, colour, culture, religious fraternity and legal constitution of the broader society. However, we must never lose sight of human compassion and interests of humanity in general. Laws and religious ethics are made to serve humanity and this must override any views or values an individual may hold. Otherwise such rules and ethics are not worth the paper they are written on. This category will focus on issues pertaining to societal interests, code and practice.
