ਏ ਮਨ ਚੰਚਲਾ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
O fickle mind, no one has found God (i.e. spiritual liberation, bliss, merger) through cleverness or worldly intellect.
ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿਨੈ ਤੂ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ ॥
Listen O mind (of mine), no one has realised the One through worldly intellect or shrewdness.
ਏਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਏਤੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
The fascination of Maya is so bewitching that mortals wander, aimlessly, in duality.
ਮਾਇਆ ਤ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਤਿਨੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਈਆ ॥
The poor mortal is besotted by the deviousness of Maya, but it’s all part of the Creator’s Play.
(Note: The enchanting Maya in which the poor mortal entraps himself (herself) is also the testing creation of the One.)
ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
Instead of succumbing to Maya, submit to the One who has created this sweet emotional entrapment.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਨ ਚੰਚਲ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥ {ਪੰਨਾ 918}
Says Nanak, O restless mind, no one has realised the One with worldly dexterity or smartness.
