Question: Who am I first, a Sikh or a human being?
The answer, I think, lies in ‘What is Sikhi?’
- To follow and contemplate the teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
- A way of life to practice tolerance, imbibe love and compassion for all living beings
- To seek spiritual knowledge and incorporate it in daily life.
- To rein in the five negative traits: Kaam (lust), krodh (rage), lobh (greed), moh (attachment), hunkaar (egoism).
- To rise above race, colour and creed – treat the whole world as one nation.
- To fight/campaign against Injustice and oppression.
- To shun vanity and seek the company of the meek and the humble (Bhai Lalo v Malik Bhago.
- To rise above jealousy and bigotry. Na ko bairy nahi begana sagal sang hum kao bun aa.ee. (1299)
- To shun rituals (karam kaand), rise above superstition and perform good deeds.
- It’s not just about katha and kirtan but about implementing the Shabd (Word).
- Recite & practice Naam; earn honest living; share food, prosperity & knowledge.
